Abstract :
The author presents the rationale for energy storage on utility systems, describes the general technology of SMES (superconducting magnetic energy storage), and explains the chronological development of technology. The present ETM (Engineering Test Model) program is outlined. The impact of high-Tc materials on SMES is discussed. It is concluded that SMES is marginally competitive with other storage technologies and is likely to remain so
