Abstract :
Conventional power supplies used in TIG welding generally produce alternating (mains frequency), direct or pulsed direct currents, in order to excite the arc used in melting the components to be welded. The authors show that there could be advantages in using high-frequency alternating square-wave current supplies to produce the arc. A design of a suitable supply is described, as well as the resulting arc properties. Photographs of the welds produced are included for aluminium alloy.
