Abstract
A novel near-optimal receiver is introduced for the detection of signals in noise modelled with a new probability distribution called a generalised normal-Laplace (GNL) distribution. The near-optimal detector is based on the approximation of GNL probability density function (PDF) while the optimum detector uses the PDF obtained by the Fourier inversion of the characteristic function. The performance of the near-optimal receiver is shown to be very close to the optimum receiver.
