Abstract :
A finely gain-flattened wideband hybrid amplifier for a 120 km transmission fibre span with a significantly enhanced optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is realised using a distributed Raman amplifier, a 1580 nm erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA), and a gain equaliser. The amplifier yields a 5.4 dB improvement in OSNR and 3.7 times (5.6 dB) improvement in average transmission distance (from 570 to 2088 km) compared to a lumped EDFA
