Abstract :
Pulse code modulation is being explored as a possible technique for greatly increasing the information handling capacity of conventional telephone cables. For example, there is a possibility that a single twisted pair may handle 176 telephone conversations simultaneously, or that seven such pairs may handle a complete television signal by utilizing pulse code modulation techniques. A maximum rate of 10 million pulses per second is required on each pair.
