Abstract :
Small “power plants,” consisting of two mercury battery packs, each weighing slightly over 2 pounds, have been used in transmitting signals from outer space. These mercury batteries, developed by P. R. Mallory & Co., Inc., Indianapolis, Ind., have been employed in U.S. satellites Explorer I, II, and III, as well as Vanguard I and II.
