Abstract :
Cogging torque, as a very important design consideration in permanent-magnet (PM) machines, has been widely investigated for decades. In this paper, the study will be focused on the cogging torque behavior in surface-mounted PM (SPM) machines with two types of cost-effective PM designs. The results show that in a SPM machine with either type of cost-effective PM design, low cogging torque performance can be achieved, as confirmed by both finite-element analyses and experiments.
