Abstract :
Japan´s plans to reprocess fuel and create a waste depository in Japan and to add two plants a year for 20 yr to meet future energy needs are discussed. A recent accident in which an aging pressurized-water reactor sprang a leak in its primary cooling system and its potential impact on these plans are examined. The status of Japan´s nuclear industry and technology is discussed, focusing on safety issues.<>
