  • Abstract
Solar irradiance models are commonly used for determining incident solar radiation on a surface. However, such models are seldom capable of capturing the full temporal dynamics of solar irradiance or accounting effectively for spatial variability. We present a model which is used in combination with high resolution LIDAR city surface models to simulate solar irradiance across the urban surface throughout the day. The model can be used to fully assess the solar PV energy generating capacity of an urban area of any size with results filtered by municipal GIS dataset attributes if required. The model can be used to help guide urban PV investment strategies and policies aimed at promoting low carbon or smart city concepts. It allows for full assessment and utilisation of structurally integrated urban solar power generation.
