Abstract :
The paper describes the expansion of the long-distance telephone and telegraph networks in India which took place during the war. The scope and results of the wartime ¿Telecommunications Development Scheme,¿, planned to meet operational and administrative needs, are recorded and illustrated. Reference is made to factors affecting planning of the telecommunications development and to the difficulties encountered in execution of the work. Details are given of some features of the engineering design of the new overhead lines and of the carrier equipment and trunk-exchange installations. Mention is also made of difficulties in the maintenance and operation of lines and apparatus in the severe climatic conditions, and the effects of wartime expansion on the post-war development of telecommunications in India.
