The problems associated with a successful transition from professional engineer to professional manager are discussed, and several prerequisites defined as 1) the motivation to manage, 2) a full awareness of the many facets of professional management, and 3) either a role model for the candidate to emulate, or experential training that allows him or her to practice the required managerial behavior patterns.
