Abstract :
This paper forms one of a series on standardization initiated by The Institution, and deals with switchgear for alternating-current systems. A wide diversity of requirements and many types and arrangements of switchgear available are reviewed from the aspect of standardization under four main sections: supply-system requirements; performance requirements for rating; types and constructions; components and auxiliary equipment. Rationalization and the need for quantity production are discussed in relation to standardization and the benefits accruing therefrom. Suggestions are made for a reduction in the number of British Standard circuit-breakers, and further steps in the standardization of performance-requirements are reviewed. The problem of standardizing types and constructions is examined with reference to the various voltage ranges, and factors governing the selection of switchgear are discussed with the object of ascertaining the views of those concerned in the industry. General suggestions are made for standardization or for rationalization; detailed design standardization appears feasible only for some of the smaller switch-gear, for components and for auxiliary equipment. It is suggested that efforts should be made to achieve a greater measure of standardization by closer collaboration amongst users, consulting engineers and manufacturers, and to this end the formation of two panels is suggested.
