Abstract :
If engineers could agree on and use a professional title that would be accepted globally, they might better serve the public and have more political influence. So begins a recent letter to the editor of Civil Engineering magazine. Similar communiques appear from time to time in many other professional engineering journals, and they usually evoke in me a flickering of interest and agreement.
