Software for designing large systems: How to ‘automate’ in creating, verifying, and analyzing systems when subelements, components, and interrelationships are too numerous to track

Like many complex designs, the Andy Warhol robot began as an apparently simple project. But by the time a working prototype was demonstrated, it had so many subsystems, components, and interrelationships that no designer could have kept track of them mentally. Some 50 high-level diagrams of the system architecture and 175 representations of subsystems were needed to develop the prototype.
