Abstract :
The article explores some of the factors and personalities involved in the introduction of ironclad (or metalclad) switchgear in 1906. This unique British response to the safety of switching in electricity supply systems was mainly due to the efforts of one engineer: Henry Clothier. Although his `metalclad´ vision was restricted by existing economics and technology, the essential principles are still evident in modern switchgear practice
