Abstract :
In 1986, the company granted the most patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was Japanese — and that was the first time a non-U.S. company has held that distinction. Hitachi Ltd. overtook the previous year´s leader, General Electric Co., while Toshiba Corp., also of Japan, was third, followed by IBM and another Japanese company, Canon Kabushiki Kaisha.
