Abstract :
A security constrained reliability evaluation procedure is presented. To assess the degree of system well-being associated with the generating unit operating reserve in a composite generation and transmission system. The assessment of unit commitment in a composite system recognises the ability of the transmission system to deliver the generated energy to the major load points. An approach is used to determine the required number of committed units to meet the system load while satisfying the operating criteria. The system well-being indices are calculated using a hybrid approach when stand-by units are included in the analysis. The impact on the composite generation and transmission system well-being indices and the required number of committed units of variation in the size and location of stand-by units are also examined
