Abstract :
Virtually all objects made from metal have been molten at least once during their production from the original ore source. This fact illustrates the importance of the metal-melting operation in producing the useful and decorative metallic objects which have been available virtually throughout the history of mankind. It is only comparatively recently that electrical energy has replaced fossil fuels in the melting process. The authors discuss metal melting in the UK and go on to describe several electric furnaces. These are: the arc furnace; the coreless induction furnace; the channel induction furnace; and resistance furnaces
