Abstract :
The average energy required to produce one scintillation photon Ws was determined for 662 keV gamma rays in CsI(Tl), CsI(Na), PWO, BGO, YAP(Ce), LSO(Ce), GSO(Ce), CWO, and LaBr3(Ce) crystals from the number of photoelectrons measured by a combination of a crystal and a photomultiplier tube (PMT). The number of scintillation photons was obtained by calculating the collection and conversion efficiency of photons at the PMT photocathode using Monte Carlo simulations and by determining experimentally the photon-to-photoelectron conversion efficiency at the photocathode. Ws determined for CsI(Tl) in the present study agrees well with the theoretical value presented recently.
