Abstract
Conducting particles in transmission and switching equipment insulated by compressed sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) can result in loss of as much as 90% of the gas dielectric strength. Particles in practical systems can exist in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and of materials of different densities. In this paper, the effect of particle size on the probability of SF6 breakdown is discussed. Theoretical and experimental results are presented.
