    A wide-bandwidth, optically pre-amplified receiver at 10 Gbit/s is demonstrated in the 1575-1600 nm wavelength range using a gain-shifted EDFA for the first time. It offers a sensitivity of better than -38.0 dBm at a bit error rate of 10-9
