Abstract :
Are our news accounts true about the Amazon region of South America? Can students find out for themselves if there is change to our planet due to deforestation? Middle school KidSat students answer these questions with valid research and image processing software to quantify changes in the Earth using KidSat images and archived Space Shuttle photographs. The growth of the city of Manaus in central Brazil and the seasonal differences in the river surface area are quantified using images chosen for study by students from the Redwood Student Mission Operations Center (SMOC)
