Abstract :
The planar multilayer dielectric structure (PMLS) has been used as a model for large diameter vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, to analyse the vertical and in-plane components of spontaneous emission (SE). Both λ and λ/2 cavities have been considered. Calculations show a high level of in-plane SE for both cases. The results are discussed in the context of recent experimental measurements of in-plane emission in VCSELs
