A major transition is under way in industry and commerce across the United States. We hear about it in such terms as “sunrise versus sunset” or “high-tech versus smokestack” industries. At the same time, we hear politicians constantly talk about changes in industrial policy. Underneath all these seemingly dynamic clichés, a major shift in the nature of work itself is taking place. Word processors are replacing typewriters, computer-controlled machinery is replacing manual work, and maintenance engineers are replacing production workers. It is clear from all this movement that as work changes, the worker — the person who makes it all happen — must change also.
