Abstract :
Discrete event simulation (DES) is a well established modelling tool in the manufacturing environment. Like all such tools, it can be used inappropriately. The article describes its uses. It then suggests reasons for inaccuracies in its use; incorrect construction of the model, inappropriate manufacturing strategy, and unsuitable dispatching rules. Other problems are also discussed; these can be overcome by the use of artificial intelligence
