Abstract :
We discuss the relationship, for recording media, between the parameters of some Preisach-based hysteresis models and the recording industry parameters (RIP) in wide use. It is shown that, although the RIPs are not adequate to completely characterize magnetic media, they are derivable from these models. In particular, the RIPs do not account for the fact that the measured squareness of minor loops is in general different from the major loop squareness, which is an important factor in determining the applicability of media in state-of-the-art recording applications. As recording densities increase the corresponding detection strategies become more sophisticated; thereby more accurate media characterization will be required
