Abstract
Photonics-the technology of using particles of light as carriers of information-is catching on because of the advantages of optical fiber over copper cable for data transmission, and the use of optoelectronic techniques for sensing and instrumentation. Here, the author describes how powerful laser models in photonics system simulators are a vital step toward virtual optical benches for optimizing such communication system design
