Abstract :
Improvements in recording densities that are allowing magnetic storage to pack more data than its optical counterparts are examined. The technologies that have driven the advances are discussed. They consist of highly sensitive magnetoresistive heads, ultra-low-noise magnetic media, and advanced signal detection techniques. Disk and tape performances are compared.<>
