Abstract
We propose a general principle for the guiding of light waves through heterogeneous metamaterial layers: light waves have a tendency to increase their portion guided through the medium having a larger N2 value than the neighbors, where N2 is defined as the product of material permittivity and permeability values. Using this principle, we discuss qualitatively the characteristics of fundamental optical modes in several metamaterial waveguide structures.
