Abstract :
A narrow-beam superluminescent diode (SLD) has been developed using a butt-jointed selectively grown spot-size converter and a newly designed absorption region. High output power and low spectral modulation have been achieved. The far field patterns for both the horizontal and vertical direction were as narrow as 10°. The coupling efficiency of the output power into a flat-ended singlemode fibre (4 μm spot size) was as high as -1.9 dB without lenses
