Abstract :
Reflecting increased newspaper employment advertising, the Deutsch, Shea, and Evans demand index for engineers and scientists hit 139.8 in April, up from a March figure of 120.5. However, while DS&E´s subindex data for April show that both classified and display newspaper advertising increased strongly, technical journal employment advertising declined. DS&E believes further demand index gains are likely over the next few months, explaining that lead time and other factors cause recruiting programs in technical journals to lag those conducted via newspaper. DS&E index figures are derived directly from monthly totals of employment listings in key newspapers and technical journals.
