Abstract :
The Consolidated Edison Company will increase its generating capacity in operation in New York City as a precautionary measure in the event of a storm threat to any of the company´s major installations. This is just one of a series of interim steps Con Ed has been taking to prevent another major blackout such as the one that occurred on the night of July 13. Other measures include such steps as the reduction of imported power into the company´s service areas (resulting in increases in cost and pollution), increases in staff at Con Ed´s energy control center and other installations, improvements in the “black start” capability of gas turbines, and the upgrading of telephone and radio communications. Meanwhile, an investigation of the recent blackout by the company´s review board is underway, with a report to the public expected momentarily.
