Abstract
Photonic crystal fibre could mark the start of a new era in optical communications. The author describes the work of Philip Russell in the development of this technology which is based on the photonic bandgap of crystals. The physics involved is explained and the development and manufacture of the photonic crystal fibre is described. The need to reduce losses is mentioned. The advantages of photonic crystal fibres and some potential applications are briefly outlined
