  • Abstract
One of the first steps that James Schlesinger will take in his role as Secretary of the newly created U.S. Department of Energy will be to address Federal energy research functions, which previously resided in the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration. Under the reorganization act, these functions will be reassigned to one or more of eight new Assistant Secretaries. Dr. Schlesinger has indicated that he intends to streamline the research organization to make it more responsive to national needs.
