The average monthly starting salary for new B.S.E.E. graduates during the 1976–1977 academic year was $1245, an increase of 8.6 percent over 1975–1976 figures, according to the College Placement Council´s July 1977 report. Some other engineering specialties fared even better; chemical engineers were reported starting at $1389 per month, and mechanical engineers at $1286 per month. Lower monthly earnings were reported for industrial engineers ($1257), civil engineers ($1185), and graduates of four-year engineering technology programs ($1177).
