Abstract :
A National Project on Philosophy and Engineering Ethics will pair engineers and philosophers to develop and implement joint projects in engineering ethics — including research on specific ethical problems and case studies, teaching projects, and projects in conjunction with professional engineering societies. Phase 1 of the three-phase project — which has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and will be administered through the Center for the Study of the Human Dimensions of Science and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute — includes an Institute on Philosophical Ethics for Engineers, an Institute for Philosophers on Ethical Problems in Engineering, and a joint workshop on Projects in Engineering Ethics. The events will be held on the R.P.I. campus in Troy, N.Y., July 16–August 5, 1978. Phase 2, scheduled for the 1978–79 academic year, will have each team work out the details of its project, which is to be completed during the 1979–80 academic year.
