  • Abstract
Experimental investigations of 112 Gb/s PM-QPSK transmission are reviewed for systems with 100 km spans and EDFA-only amplification, 200 km spans and hybrid amplification (distributed Raman amplification (DRA) and EDFA), and 100 km spans and DRA-only amplification. By taking advantage of optical fibers with ultra-low loss and very large effective area, transmission distances of 7200 km, 5400 km and 10 200 km, respectively, were achieved for multi-channel transmission with a 50 GHz channel spacing. For the first of these systems, the impact of the signal processing algorithms on the long-haul bit error ratio performance is examined with an emphasis on the sensitivity to the values of key algorithm parameters.
