  • Abstract
The National Science Foundation has extensively reorganized its applied research activities, abolishing the program of Research Applied to National Needs (RANN), and replacing it with what is to be known as the Science and Engineering Applications Directorate. According to an NSF announcement, “The changes are designed to provide a more sharply focused scientific and engineering attack on emerging or existing national problems and to help build a better bridge between basic research and the solution of such problems.”
