Abstract
The ability to accurately estimate arrival times of mass transit vehicles is extremely important to public transportation systems since it governs the perceived quality of experience and influences its appeal. The majority of existing solutions are primarily concerned with the specific problem at hand and overlook the communication overhead associated when implementing such a system in practice. The latter issue is addressed in this work with the aim of achieving good estimates with minimal communication. An event-based monitoring process is designed for that purpose which is tested in a real-world bus service running along a particular route of the public transport network in Nicosia, Cyprus. The proposed solution significantly reduces the message exchanges needed to maintain accurate location estimates of busses with minimal computation requirements.
