Abstract
Auxiliary ignition wires are a well-known tool to support the ignition of high-pressure discharge lamps. The effect of these wires in cylindrical high-pressure discharge lamps made from polycrystalline alumina is visualized by applying high-voltage pulses of a spark tester to one of the electrodes. Microdischarges are observed, which are capable to support lamp ignition.
