Abstract :
The historical development of the Soviet electricity supply network and, in particular, the part played to hydroelectric power is described. The underlying philosophy behind, and the role of the Soviet five year plans in, the growth of installed hydroelectric capacity is explained. The changes in approach to the exploitation of water resources are discussed and recent moves by the USSR towards a multi-use approach are detailed
