Abstract :
The author presents a proposed methodology for finding the degrees of series-capacitor and shunt-reactor compensation used to increase the power transfer capability of the overhead power transmission existing rights of way and to get adequate control of steady-state voltage and reactive power requirements. The proposed methodology is based on assumed system design criteria and takes into consideration several schemes of compensation. Three new compensation effectiveness indexes are proposed and are used to help in the analysis of the compensated transmission line. The proposed methodology is applied to increase the power transfer capability of the existing 500 kV High Dam-Cairo transmission line in Egypt and results are provided
