Abstract :
The authors use a predictive procedure called the extended lightning critical flashover (CFO) added method to estimate the lightning insulation strength of four distribution configurations. The extended CFO added method is intended to provide the designer with relative trends in lightning insulation strengths of distribution structures so that the engineer can quickly compare designs and make appropriate tradeoffs. The entire calculation process is demonstrated in an example. Laboratory measurements, quantifying the lightning insulation strength, were performed on each of the configurations. These measured results are presented for comparison to the predicted values
