Abstract
The authors experimentally determined the absorption of pure CO/sub 2/ and of mixtures of CO/sub 2/ with helium, at the emission wavelengths of a pulsed HF laser, in the same conditions at which lasing takes place in CO/sub 2/ by optical pumping of the relevant energy levels in the mixtures. Linear behavior of the absorption coefficient was found for mixtures containing 1 atm of CO/sub 2/ and increasing partial pressures of He up to 9 atm. In pure CO/sub 2/, however, the coefficient varied nonlinearly and tended to a saturation value at high pressures.<>
