Abstract
This paper deals with the problem of optimal layout for the placement of garment patterns. The proposed genetic algorithm is adapted for use to minimize fabric waste in garment production industry. Each garment piece is modeled as a polygonal object with a default orientation, but may be rotated 180 degrees. The layout of all the pieces is realized in yielding some successive partial solutions until the order book is empty. The efficiency is measured as the length of fixed-width fabric used. Results provided compare our genetic algorithm to human experts. The results from our experiments show that our genetic algorithm can improve the efficiency of almost all production quality markers, shirts, trousers and other garments.
