Abstract :
The authors have developed a novel universal pattern-matching image compression scheme (PMC) that avoids the pattern-set mismatch problem. The spatial vector quantization approach was enhanced by self-organization of pattern sets and the encoding of future subblocks by copying from a frame memory containing the recently decoded subblocks. Computer simulations on still images have demonstrated that this technique could very efficiently compress sampled images, especially at rates under 1.0 bit per pixel
