Abstract
This paper concerns the design and analysis of a 1 kW high speed air-cored surface mounted axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) synchronous machine intended to be used in a man- portable power platform. With a double rotor and a slot-less stator structure, the machine is designed with a maximum speed of 50,000 rpm. Both analytical equations and three dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) models are developed for the design and analysis of the machine performance. The FEA results confirm the validity of the analytical model and show excellent efficiency and power density of the proposed machine. Finally, machine losses due to high speed are critically evaluated.
