Abstract
The paper explores the impact of winding distribution and rotor design on the performance of brushless AC permanent magnet traction motors used in hybrid vehicles, during constant torque and field weakened modes of operation. The discussion is illustrated through finite element field and loss analyses based around a prototype eight-pole 33 kW continuous rated traction motor for a dual-mode hybrid car.
