Abstract :
Summary form only given. Giant field-induced strain (magnetic shape memory - MSM - effect) is due to a redistribution of martensite twin variants. The redistribution is driven by a difference of magnetic energy in differently oriented martensite variants. Experimental determination of magnetization M = M(H, /spl sigma/) and field-induced strain /spl epsi/ = /spl epsi/(H, /spl sigma/) as a function of field, H, and stress, /spl sigma/ gives full description of the behaviour of MSM material. Moreover by simultaneous measurements of M and /spl epsi/ the direct relation between M and /spl epsi/ is established and the mechanism of MSM effect is ascertained.
