Abstract
The paper presents the design and practical realisation of a three phase 160 kVA auxiliary resonant commutated pole (ARCP) converter. The converter was built as a model for high power converters enabling switching with a high switching frequency. The second aim is to build a 160 kVA converter for a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system acting as a shunt active filter compensating active, reactive power and harmonics in the low voltage grid.
